September wrap-up

I am still kind of in disbelief that tomorrow is October 1. September just flew by for me! But it has been a good month. Back-to-school went very smoothly; the new schedule is finally starting to feel "normal" (as opposed to crazed); and I managed to meet my September crafty goals for Carrie P.'s Nothing but UFOs Challenge! Woo!

  1. School bag for Little Bear:

    Mail Sack, Little Bear view

The bag was complete just in time for back-to-school (blogged).

  2. Harrington & Hannah:

    basting Harrington & Hannah

Not only did I finish the top, but I managed to get it basted. Yay!!!

  3. Spring Mystery Quilt:

    Completed and blogged!

It feels good to check things off the list. Many thanks to Carrie P. for the continued inspiration and motivation!

September goals

Nothing But UFOs in 2013 button

Another month, another set of goals for Carrie P.'s Nothing but UFOs Challenge!

  1. School bag for Little Bear:

    materials for Little Bear's bag

It is cut and ready to be sewn. Preschool starts on Monday for Little Bear, so this project is top priority!

  2. Harrington & Hannah:

    completed Harrington and Hannah blocks

All the blocks are complete (yay!). Now it is time to put them all together, add borders, and get a backing made. It would be a bonus if I could get it basted too... we'll see.

  3. Spring Mystery Quilt:

    Spring Mystery Quilt completed top

This one needs to be basted and quilted.

Frankly, this month's calendar already looks insane, so I'm not sure how productive I'll be. But I am still feeling the pull of my UFOs and really want to keep progressing as much as I can while the motivation is still there. And I'm actually starting to feel like it might be time to get going on something new too, just to mix it up.

August accomplishments

Nothing But UFOs in 2013 button

It has been a busy month full of fun family adventure (vacations, outings, and activities galore), but not a whole lot of crafting (and even less blogging). However, I did manage to complete my August goals for Carrie P.'s Nothing but UFOs Challenge. It took me until the last day of the month, but I did it. Woo hoo!

  1. Baby Bot quilt:

    Baby Bots quilting detail

    Done!

  2. Mod Mosaic quilt:

    Mod Mosaic binding in progress

Quilting is complete and the binding is now in progress (2 sides to go!). I'm really pleased with this one. Crossing my fingers that it will join the finished pile very soon!

  3. Vogue 1224:

Vogue 1224, completed and on the hanger

I completed it this morning! Woo! But then I spent the day doing yard work and was too gross to put it on for a picture, so the slightly blurry hanger shot will have to do for now.

Yay for progress! And, as always, many thanks to the fabulous and inspiring Carrie P. for hosting the challenge (and helping me get my bum in gear!).

I plan to do separate write-ups so I can share more details about each of these projects (and more pictures!) very soon. Hmmm... maybe I should try making some blogging-oriented goals for September? I've got some catch-up to do!

UFO Challenge Win!

Nothing But UFOs in 2013 button

As if I wasn't a winner enough just for successfully doing the challenge, I also won Carrie P.'s "Nothing But UFOs" July drawing! Yesterday afternoon, I received my prize...

just look at how pretty this package is!

It was wrapped so prettily!

look at all of this happy goodness!

And inside was a wonderful array of treats-- some handmade, some vintage, and lots of happy.

even the zipper pouch was full of treats...

Even the little pouch was full of goodies! (Look at those trims! And that lovely handkerchief!)

And the block is gorgeous... it needs a picture all its own:

a beautiful applique block from Carrie P.

I'm kind of thinking it would make a lovely quilted pillow cover. I've not made one before. But Carrie P. has made quite a few-- so it just kind of feels right, you know?

Meanwhile, I am plugging along with my August challenge. I'm binding up the baby quilt, and I've started quilting my Mod Mosaic.

Progress!

Many thanks to Carrie P. and her monthly motivational challenge. It feels good to work on these UFOs and even better to be finishing them!

UFO Challenge - August

Nothing But UFOs in 2013 button

Woo!!! I can hardly believe it-- I was the winner in July's Nothing but UFOs Challenge hosted by Carrie P. at A Passion for Applique! What a treat!

Since I seem to be on a bit of a roll still, joining the challenge for August will be a good motivator for me and help keep me on track. (One can always hope!) So here are my three goals for August:

  1. Baby Bot quilt:

Bot Baby quilt, ready for some binding

Baby is due any day now, so I want to get this one DONE! Still to do: binding and label.

  2. Mod Mosaic quilt:

Mod Mosaic quilt rolled and ready for quilting

This one is basted. I'd really like to get it quilted. Even better would be finished-- but that might be stretching it a bit considering how much time I have available in August... it is a busy month!

  3. Vogue 1224:

    sewing plan for Vogue 1224

It has been cut out for three months now. I would really like to get this sewn so I can actually wear it at least one time before summer is over.

Meanwhile, I am still feeling the itch to work on other things... new things... I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to stay UFO-focused. But I'm gonna give it a go!

A not-quite-successful challenge...

Nothing But UFOs in 2013 button

It is true. I did not manage to finish a single one of my three challenge projects. Heck, I didn't even manage to do any blogging! But you know what? I'm still feeling like a winner, because I made progress on each of the three projects I chose.

1. Fall Mystery Quilt:

Fall Mystery Quilt binding in progress

It is now quilted (with some feathers, even!), I'm about 2/3 through the binding, and the label is made. Not done, but very close!

2. Bot Camp Disappearing 9-Patch:

Bot Camp baby quilt ready for binding

All quilted up and ready for binding (I'm going to use that happy Kona Peacock pictured above). I've also designed the label, but am waiting for our friend's baby to be born so I can personalize it (he's due this week!).

3. Mod Mosaic Quilt:

Mod Mosaic basted and rolled up like a burrito, ready for some quilting action

Once I get the binding on the baby quilt, this one is next in the queue for quilting. But I consider this definite progress. Basting is half the battle, right?

Nothing finished, but a good amount of progress. And if it weren't for the challenge, there is no way I would have gotten this much accomplished. As far as I'm concerned, this challenge has definitely been a success. Thanks, Carrie P.!

Here's hopin' I have some finished quilts to share soon!

Setting goals: July

Back in January, the fabulous Carrie P. of A Passion for Applique issued a challenge: Nothing But UFOs in 2013! Now I'm definitely not that hard core, but I have been spending time this year working on my UFO situation some. So this month, I'm taking the big step and am actually participating in the challenge. Woo!

Nothing But UFOs in 2013 button

The idea is to pick three UFOs and show and tell what you need to do to get them finished (quilted, bound and done). At the end of the month, we all share our successes and if you finish at least one of your chosen UFOs, then you are entered into a drawing for fun prizes.

Here are my focus UFOs for the month:
  1. Fall Mystery Quilt:

Fall Mystery Quilt all basted up

This one has been basted and ready for quilting since April. It is time to get it done!
  2. Bot Camp Disappearing 9-Patch:

    Bot Camp baby quilt

The top and back are ready and the next step is basting. This is a smaller quilt, so hopefully it will quilt up pretty quickly.
  3. Mod Mosaic Quilt:

    Mod Mosaic top

Again, I have the top and back all set, so the next step is basting. This is a bigger one, but I have a plan in mind for quilting, so I'm hopeful I can get something accomplished with this one as well.
Here's hoping that setting the goals will get me on the path to some finishes!

One Thing, One Week Challenge: Catch-up edition

This last week, Amy at Amy's Creative Side hosted another One Thing, One Week Challenge, and I decided to take the plunge and commit.

One Thing, One Week Challenge button

This time, my goal was to catch up on my Adventures of Harrington & Hannah block-of-the-month.

Adventures of Harrington and Hannah button

I needed to finish April, and then complete May and June. That worked out to about 2.25 blocks (because April was all done but for the sashing). And I did it!

April:

May:

June:

I really wanted to be caught up before the next block is posted, so this challenge came at a really good time. And I love that I've finally been feelin' the handwork again lately. Woo!

If you have the chance, check out some of the other inspiring challenge finishes for the week over at Amy's Creative Side!

One Thing, One Week Challenge: Gettin' my quiltin' on!

One Thing, One Week Challenge button

For this week's One Thing, One Week Challenge at Amy's Creative Side, my focus was to quilt my Whimsy project.

a detail shot of some of the quilting on the Whimsy baby quilt

Success!!! I went a little out of my box on this one by trying out straight-line quilting with my walking foot. I did end up doing a tiny bit of free-motion around the embroidery (just outlining the stitched circles), but everything else was with the walking foot. I'm glad I gave it a go as it is a fun look, but I learned that it is really not my favorite style to quilt. Free-motion is more challenging for me, but it is also more fun.

Next up: binding!

If you get a chance, take some time to browse through the other challenge participants' successes-- there is always lots of awesome creative energy and inspiration to be found!

Another challenge week + pillow

Amy at Amy's Creative Side announced the latest One Thing, One Week Challenge yesterday. I immediately jumped on the bandwagon!

One Thing, One Week Challenge button

For the last challenge, I pushed myself to get my Whimsy quilt basted.

basted Whimsy quilt

This time, I want to get it quilted!

In other news, another birthday party = another Personalized Name Pillow:

name pillow for Jackson

Again, I used minkee for the back of the pillow. It has been received so well each time, I think that minkee is going to be my go-to choice for these pillows.

close-up of the hand stitched edge of the pillow

This is my fourth iteration of this design, and I'm finally starting to get the hang of hand stitching the open edge (if you look closely, you can see the line of hand-stitching in the picture above). I'm usually pretty good at this kind of thing, but trying to make my stitches look clean and happy with the combo of minkee and cotton has been challenging.

Seriously, this pattern rocks. So simple, and so happy!

This week in the quilt mines...

...was a little on the slow side. First Little Bear got sick, followed by Big Bear and Papa. It was not a healthful week here in the Crafty Musings house!

On the bright side:

basted top of my Whimsy quilt-- yay!

I did manage to meet my goal for this week's One Thing, One Week Challenge at Amy's Creative Side! Woo! I am very happy to report that I managed to get the basting done on my Whimsy quilt. I had hoped to maybe start quilting it, but it was not meant to be last week. Maybe this week?

One Thing, One Week Challenge button

If you get a chance, check out what some of the other intrepid One Weekers accomplished this week-- it is always very inspiring!

One Thing, One Week Challenge returns!

Amy over at Amy's Creative Side is again hosting the One Thing, One Week Challenge. Yay! I love these challenges. They work really well for me as motivation to accomplish something (especially those somethings that maybe I'm not so motivated to do otherwise).

One Thing, One Week Challenge button

Remember this project?

embroidered Whimsy blocks

Ha! Even I only vaguely remember this project. I actually completed the top way back in June and it has been languishing on top of my needs-to-be-quilted pile ever since. The baby I'm making it for is now 7 months old, so I need to get going!

So, for this week's challenge, my goal is to get the Whimsy quilt basted and (fingers crossed) maybe even start quilting it.

Style Stitches Monthly Bag Challenge: Everything Wristlet

Style Stitches Monthly Bag Challenge button
The October Style Stitches Monthly Bag Challenge was the Everything Wristlet. I actually finished it mid-October, but somehow managed to fail in blogging about it. So here goes...

Everything Wristlet: front view
I chose to make the small version and used some fabrics that have been in my stash for quite some time.

Everything Wristlet: back view
I love that taupe-y medallion print and wish I had taken time to center the design. But when I was cutting, I didn't even think of that. Doh!

Everything Wristlet: side view
This bag is in the "Experienced" (read: advanced) section of the book. And it really earns that moniker.

Everything Wristlet: inside view
There were a number of challenges in making this bag, almost all of which had to do with the lining elements.

Everything Wristlet: sewing through some crazy thickness
For one thing, there was some crazy thickness going on because the design called for sewing through multiple layers of Peltex. Fortunately, my machine worked it like a champ. But it caused for some stress.

Everything Wristlet: 3-step inside zipper insertion
And, as always seems the case for me and these bags, the zipper instructions were very challenging. The lining is made up of two parts: the card slot/center pocket and the main body. The main body starts as one long rectangular piece of fabric. The zipper is laid on top then the lining is folded over on top of itself and laid on top of the bottom half of the zipper to create the pocket. So when stitching the bottom half of the zipper, one has to be careful not to accidentally stitch the whole pocket closed. Because the pocket is so narrow, the only way to avoid stitching through it is to sew it in 3 steps (illustrated above): 1. from the outer edge to the head of the zipper; then take it out of the machine and open the zipper and reposition the foot on the edge of where the stitching started and 2. sew to the end of the zipper, at which point you have to remove it from the machine and then 3. sew from the other outside edge to the end of the zipper.

In fact, the whole time I was working on it, I was sure I must be doing it incorrectly, because none of this was detailed in the instructions at all. All it said was: "Note: Do not stitch through the back of the pocket." But it actually worked. I was shocked. Really. I probably wouldn't have even used her technique (being as I swore off A.B. zipper instructions), except that the lining is a single piece that is folded accordian-style to create the inside of the bag. It is actually a clever design, but the execution involved to make it happen is challenging.

Everything Wristlet: inserting the lining
Inserting the lining was interesting as well (but it definitely went more smoothly than the zipper!). Essentially, you drop it inside of the bag body, fold the edges of each to the inside, and then edgestitch all around the perimeter. In theory this is simple. In practice it is challenging because you need to deal with crazy thickness on the sides, the barrier of the center pocket section, and with lining up the stitching with the outside flap seam (which you can't see at all). It took lots of pins, going very slowly, and then a little bit of handstitching to finish it all off-- but it worked.

me and my Everything Wristlet
It turned out to be a cute little bag. I like it, but I think I would like the larger version better. I'm not sure I'll ever go back and make another of this bag though, as it was a lot of effort for a style that is just okay for me. But you never know.

I didn't manage to finish the November bag, but it seems that JemJam, the challenge host, is taking a little break too. She says she'll jump back in again soon, but until she does, I probably won't start on the final two bags. I've got so much else going on with the upcoming holidays, I think it will be good to take a little break.
